Dine Fuerteventura: La Factoria, Corralejo

Situated in the north of Feurteventura is Corralejo, a lively resort that was once a dusty port outpost and now attracts a mix of tourists from across Europe. It is also home to a community of Bohemian ex-pats, seduced by the the north shore breaks that make it a surfer’s paradise. I made the 40-minute ferry journey from Playa Blanca on the neighbouring island of Lanzarote, to see what Corralejo had to offer.

There is a scruffy charm about Corralejo, particularly the ‘old town’ located around the port. Bustling bars, cafes and restaurants with view across golden sandy beaches compete for custom. Plaza Felix Esteves, the small pedestrianised plaza is filled with tables and chairs and atmospheric music. If burger, beer and fries are on your wish list, there are no end of venues in Corralejo to satisfy your appetite. But what if you want to escape the tourists and tat for something a little more laid back?

I found the perfect destination right on the shore front. La Factoria offers a delicious menu of Italian, Mediterranean, and European dishes. All served up in a warm and friendly atmosphere with a great soundtrack that makes you want to stay for dessert, coffee, and then more coffee.

As a lover of fresh seafood, I couldn’t resist the spaghetti vongole. This clam pasta dish started life as peasant food, but is now considered an Italian classic. The secret to creating a truly great spaghetti vongole is using only the freshest ingredients, cooked with love and served with simplicity. La Factoria did it to perfection. A plate of pale golden spaghetti, piled high on the plate and dotted with small butterflied clams, glistening with a touch of olive oil and infused with a hint of garlic.

I took my time, savouring every delicious mouthful as I gazed out over the bay towards Los Lobos island. Despite the inevitable stream of tourists walking past my window onto the world, this was a totally relaxing place to lunch. I resisted the temptation to delve into the list of mouth-watering desserts and ordered a latte.
