A hidden gem in the heart of Whitby

The Jet Black Jewel is a chic boutique hotel in the heart of Whitby. A quirky destination with nine bespoke rooms inspired by everything that is weird and wonderful about this fantastic town. Each room tells a peculiar tale from Whitby’s rich history of heroes and villains, smugglers and saints. Magical and mythical stories behind each jet black door that are just begging to be told.

The Scoresby Polar Bear Room takes its inspiration from the strange account of a fully-grown polar bear captured on a whaling voyage and brought back to this charming seaside town to amuse the residents.

Did an arctic beast really swim in the choppy waters of Whitby Harbour? Or was that just a salty tale told by ancient mariner Williams Scoresby?

Who knows. But one thing is for sure, this peculiar tale has inspired one of the most delightful hotel rooms you could ever have the pleasure of staying in.

The Scoresby Polar Bear Room is a fun and funky space that uses the polar bear theme to the max. You’ll spot them everywhere from the quirky lamps and bedside tables to the playful ornaments and full size mural on the wall next to the bed. But this is not a hotel room that relies on gimmicks to impress guests. Far from it.

The interior décor is smart and stylish. The black and white colour palette is brought to life with pops of teal – from the fluffy throw on the king size bed, to the rich velvet cushions on the deep window seat, and the impossibly shiny hand-made floor tiles in the en-suite. Flashes of metallics on the radiators and picture frames add an extra touch of drama – not least in the sparkly gold grout in the shower – an idea that I will unashamedly steal for my next bathroom makeover!

The overall effect is a room you’ll delight in spending time in. It’s light and airy with high ceilings and a large bay window seat that overlooks Skinner Street below – the perfect vantage point to relax and watch the world go by. And for a little bedtime reading, the hotel also provides a beautifully-illustrated booklet with all the stories that have inspired each of the rooms in this fabulous boutique accommodation. For an unmanned hotel, with no check-in desk or room service, the levels of customer service at the Jet Black Jewel are exemplary. It has all the creature comforts you could wish for. The towels are fluffy, the toiletries, deliciously fragrant. The bed is super comfy and they’re not shy with the heating. And the tea and coffee making facilities are generous to say the least. There’s also the option to order more of everything via a tick box request sheet right outside each door. Brilliantly simple, but does the job far more efficiently than some hotels I have stayed in!

The keyless palm and touch pad entry system is great too, particularly for solo guests. Personally, I don’t want to have to accommodate a giant-sized hotel key ring when I’m dressed for an evening out. It inevitably signals exactly where I’m staying. And I don’t want to fumble around for hotel keys when I return to my room. The system at the Jet Black Jewel is safe, secure and ultra convenient.

Parking is at a premium in Whitby, but the hotel has ‘help yourself’ 1-hour parking permits for the spaces on Skinner Street to load and unload luggage. Guests can also request a scratch card to park in the ‘W Zone’ of streets surrounding the hotel. Priceless at £2 for four days’ parking, given the popularity of this much-loved and visited seaside destination.

The ‘face’ of the hotel can be found in the smiles of the Jet Black Jewel Café Bar downstairs.

Equally weird and wonderful, you can peruse all manner of quirky artworks and objects while eating a delicious breakfast, lunch or a bar-style meal. The café is also a great place to hang out while sipping a coffee and enjoying a slice of cake. Or if you fancy a tipple, they even sell signature cocktails up to 9.00 pm.

Whether you’re coming to see the ruins of the Abbey, or to sample the award-winning fish and chips at the Magpie Cafe, there’s always something going on in Whitby. The Jet Black Jewel is a brilliant place to call home while you’re taking it all in. I happened to stay during Goth Weekend; a happy coincidence that made my visit even more weird and wonderful. Who knows what you’ll encounter when you stay at the Jet Black Jewel.
