Hawaiian Islands Cruise from San Francisco
Known as the Garden Island, Kauai is arguably the most dramatic of all the Hawaiian islands. It’s volcanic peaks, lush rainforests, deep canyons and scenic waterfalls have featured in more than 70 Hollywood movies and TV shows including South Pacific, Jurassic Park, and Raiders of the Lost Ark. The perfect backdrop for an eco-adventure snorkeling, zip lining, or mountain biking.
The cruise kayaking adventure I had originally booked was cancelled on the day I arrived on board. So I organized my own through DA Life Outdoors, a local company located on the beach front at Kalapaki Bay. A cruise buddy had a great deal of kayaking experience, so we hired our own tandem kayak all day for $80. We had an absolutely priceless adventure exploring the inlet off the bay area, all the way up to the fish farm, including stopping off at a picture-perfect secluded beach. Self-hire only recommended for very experienced kayakers.
A word about Ensenada
Located just 70 miles south of the border with the United States, and a mere 90 from San Diego by car, Ensenada has become Mexico’s second most visited port of call for cruise lines. With only a few hours to explore the delights of this Mexican city, the only realistic options on this cruise were shopping, or visiting local wineries or bodegas.
The cruise line recommended removing jewellery before going ashore and staying vigilant for pickpockets and muggers. I decided to stay on board and take in the view of Ensenada from the cruise liner’s sun deck.
